Trimming Guide for Horse Owner

This is a guide for those who are in the beginning stages of learning to trim their horses that have no current hoof pathologies. Do not attempt this unless we have worked together and decided you could.

  1. Find live sole plane. Scrape only sole in the corner of the heels until you find live sole.
  2. Trim hoof wall to 1/8 inch height (unless we discussed differently) from sole plane all the way around the hoof. Obey the sole plane!  In the quarters you should be dipping down some to create the dish to allow for expansion and contraction. Start dip just in front of heels.
  3. Apply Mustang Roll all around until you reach heel buttresses.
